How did you start your company?
I didn't exactly "start" my company. It evolved. I began many years ago doing personal tax returns for family and neighbors. It grew slowly. I later needed to move to accommidate family needs. Although I managed to keep most of my clients by traveling to them, it became apparent that growth would have to be home-grown. I tried some advertising again, and it did not seem to work. I then tried writing my own letters and found that this personal touch was more effective than the pre-canned marketing literature. New clients actually complemented my letter claiming that they felt that they knew me before meeting me! From this second start, referrals came in more steadily.

What or who inspired you to go into business for yourself?I guess I always a bit of an entrepreneur. I never really felt appropriately appreciated or compensated when working for an employer. In fact, one partner at a large accounting firm chided me one day in the elevator, pointing out that I was working for his retirement. At that time I realized he was right! I also realized this was wrong and decided to fix the situation.
What were some of the startup hurdles you overcame?
Much of what we do is a seasonal business. Tax is typically on customers' minds for only a short period of the year. That limits referral growth. Can you imagine a dentist setting up a practice if teeth only needed to be fixed a few months out of the year? Even with an expensive advertising blitz, this is a slow growth business by nature. We overcame this obstacle in an number of ways. We positioned our services with a year-round focus. Of course, small business need help all year, but individual tax filers don't realize the importance of year-round service- until they become our client. We also let our clients know that we are more than a tax prep service. A personal accountant who really gets to know his/her client is in a great position to offer key financial advice. Customers contact me regularly when they are entertaining a home purchase, refinancing a mortgage, deciding whether to lease or purchase car, require investment advice, experiencing budgeting problems, etc. We are our cliiets' financial doctor for whatever ails. We expanded our service to clients out-of-state. This started with clients who moved away from Long Island and wanted to maintain our service. We also expanded into tax problems... late tax filers, folks who owe money to the tax authorities, and so on. I think the common thread here is that this tax practice is focussed on helping folks.
