Tell us a little about your product or service.
WordsArt LLC provides nonfiction book editing services to both seasoned and new authors of trade or commerical books - that is, one you'd find in your local bookstore. I tailor my services to whatever type of editorial assistance you need, from helping you develop your book from a rough draft (developmental editing), to providing comprehensive editing to make the book polished and publishable. My authors' books have earned stellar reviews and some continue to sell well a decade after first publication. I've edited books on the arts, music, vocal technique, alternative cancer prevention, youth athletics, consumer finance, and self-help and inspiration, to name a few.
How did you start your company?
I began offering editing services to small businesses and film/TV production companies in Los Angeles in the early 1980s; as my service grew I began receiving larger assignments and also specializing in commercial nonfiction books of all types. I'm presently based in Westchester County north of New York City.

What or who inspired you to go into business for yourself?One of my early business clients, a management consultant whose manuals I would edit without being asked. One day, somewhat annoyed at all his errors I was pointing out, he said grouchily, "You ought to go into business doing this!" So I did.
What were some of the startup hurdles you overcame?
Because an editing service is low-overhead, my main hurdle was in finding new clients. I advertised in several small community directories; the work that brought me also produced recommendations and more projects.

Now based in New York, I needed an inexpensive way to formalize my business; LegalZoom made converting my sole proprietorship into an LLC very easy.
