On May 4th, I met with the landlord and gave her a deposit of $700.00 for the rental of a room in her house and she gave me a receipt, which we both signed. The receipt only mentioned that I would receive my deposit back when I provided a 30 day notice to vacate. It was not a lease agreement. In less than 48 hours, I informed her that my son was moving back and I would need to find another place to accommodate the both of us. She informed me that she would not return my deposit as I broke the contract. I was not scheduled to move in until June 1st, so she had plenty of time to rent the room. Can I get my deposit back?
