I signed a lease, paid a security and pet deposit on an apartment on April 16, 2012, for a move in on May 5 of that year. On April 24, 2012, I was laid off, and my employer provided a written statement on letterhead for the property management company that I was no longer employed. The property management company told me that I would have to wait until the unit was rented until I could get my deposit(s) ($1125) returned. Today is June 20, 2013. They are no longer returning my calls. I am unable to find any concrete New York State law regarding a return of a security deposit IF THE TENANT NEVER MOVES IN. I am ready to take these folks to small claims court when I can locate something tangible. Can you help? Many thanks!
