My husband and I did a move out walk through with our landlord. He gave us our security deposit on site and in full. 5 days into the new tenant's lease, the landlord contacted us to tell us the townhouse may need professional carpet cleaning and/or carpet replacement, which we would have to pay for, because the new tenants smelled an odor in one of the bedrooms. Can a landlord really require us to pay for that if he already gave us our security deposit back? Doesn't getting the security deposit back signify we are in good standing upon the end of our lease and moving out?
