My siblings, cousins and I own the mineral rights to a few acres of property in West Virginia. A company has sent leases to us requesting permission to drill for natural gas on the land. The process used will be hydraulic fracturing, to which I am adamantly opposed. I just discovered, that since other family members have signed their leases, the process will move ahead. I also discovered that I will be held responsible for paying taxes on the profits earned by the gas & oil company and my family members, even though I refuse to sign the lease.
I do not know how to get out of this mess. Would a quitclaim deed be the answer to release me from the tax burden? My first choice would be to stop the entire process, but that seems to be impossible. The whole idea of hydraulic fracturing makes me ill.
Thank you for any help you can give me.
