Google does, indeed, have the earmarks of a monopoly - more so now than ever. In the current economic climate, it is important to investigate where the money (and influence) has gone, and Google is the place to look. Their recent move to buy Motorola is the biggest in a 100+ series of corporate takeovers.

Goog started off as a copycat player in the search space, buying technology companies to model themselves after the likes of Yahoo!.  Since then, they have proceeded the same way with every market they try to enter, for example, TV ad sales, when they copied established players in the local business space like the dot-com TV agency, Cheap-TV-Spots.  As with many of their "innovations," they interacted with established companies, then popped up with their own version.
