In Washington, names are prohibited that are not distinguishable from the names of other business entities.
For sole proprietorships and general partnerships, one must provide the true and real name or names of each person conducting business, the post office address or addresses of each such person, and the name of the general partnership, if applicable. For foreign or domestic limited partnerships, one must also include the limited partnership name as filed with the office of the Secretary of State. For foreign or domestic corporations, one must also include the corporate name as filed with the office of the Secretary of State.
Each person or persons conducting business in Washington under any DBA must register that DBA with the department of licensing.
For amendments, a notice of change must be filed with the department of licensing when a change occurs in the true and real name of a person conducting a business, or any mailing address set forth on the registration or any subsequently filed notice of change. A notice of cancellation must be filed with the department when use of a DBA is discontinued. A notice of cancellation, together with a new registration, must be filed before conducting or transacting any business when an addition, deletion, or any change of person or persons conducting business under the registered DBA occurs, or when there is a change in the wording or spelling of the DBA since initial registration or renewal.
