Evangelical Christians are beginning to adopt more children as religious groups continue a recent push for members to adopt, reports the Louisville Courier-Journal.

According to the source, religious groups promoting adoption include the Southern Baptist Convention and Focus on the Family, a Colorado-based organization run by evangelical author and psychologist James Dobson.

The website of the Southern Baptist Convention indicates that the group has more than 16 million members and more than 42,000 churches in the United States.

The Pennsylvania state Supreme Court has established new rules to facilitate the adoption of children from foreign countries by state residents, according to the Patriot-News.

Under the previous system, children who entered the country in the custody of only one of their adoptive parents did not have full and final designation as the child of a U.S. couple.

Christian Diaz, a 17-year-old from Bakersfield, California, is in the midst of a custody battle over his infant son, who was placed in the care of adoptive parents without the father's consent, reports the Bakersfield Californian.

"Other teenage fathers don't want to be in their baby's life, but I do," Diaz told the source.

At the center of the dispute is a California statute saying that a baby may be put up for adoption without the consent of the father if the father does not provide appropriate support during the pregnancy.
