The California State Assembly recently passed two bills calling for the state's civil rights act to be updated. 

Both bills, SB 111 and SB 88, were authored by Democratic State Sen. Leland Yee of San Francisco, and protect the language rights of consumers and voters.

California's Unruh Civil Rights Act ensures businesses cannot deny service to patrons based on characteristics including sex, race, medical condition and sexual orientation.

Civil rights activists have been pushing for states to adopt legislation concerning same-sex unions. The latest battleground for gay rights is New York, which is several votes away from passing a law that legalizes marriage between two homosexual individuals, according to CNN.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is hoping that the lawmakers in the state will pass the law that he proposed concerning same-sex marriages, as he noted the benefits and protections that would be afforded to these individuals, reported the news source.
