Two advocacy groups have asked federal courts to review public schools in Texas amidst allegations that recent curriculum changes infringe upon the civil rights of minority students, reports the Washington Post.

Last May, the Texas State Board of Education voted to amend social studies and history curricula in the state to de-emphasize the teaching of the civil rights movement, religious freedoms and other subjects.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit heard arguments last week in an appeal regarding California's Proposition 8, a voter initiative that banned same-sex marriage in the state.

The arguments were made as part of an appeal of a lower court's ruling earlier this year that stated that the ballot initiative violated gays' and lesbians' constitutional rights to equal protection and due process.

The arguments in last week's hearing focused on two central points.

A Zion, Illinois man has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the police who he claim tortured him into confessing to the killing of his young daughter and her friend, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Jerry Hobbs found the two bodies in a park in 2005, and authorities immediately began treating him as the sole suspect.

The federal Department of Education (ED) is investigating complaints that a series of school closings in North Carolina violated the civil rights of the district's students, reports the Charlotte Observer.

An ED spokesman said that the complaints were filed following the closure of 10 schools and changes to programs at two dozen others in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District (CMS).

The mother of a student at Hononegah High School in Illinois, has filed a federal lawsuit against the school district claiming it violated her daughter's civil rights, the Rockford Register Star reports.

The lawsuit was filed recently by Kelly Wilkerson on behalf of her daughter Antoneisha Walker, who is a sophomore at the school.
