Threats of violence against members of Congress increased significantly last year amid debate over health insurance legislation, according to a report in The Hill.

The news source reports that the FBI investigated at least 26 cases of violent threats against Congressional members during 2010, which was the most in any year on record.

While many such threats may not have been carried out, lawmaker security has been a central issue since Arizona Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head in January during a meeting with her constituents in Tucson.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Representative Lamar Smith recently introduced legislation that would reform the patent system in the U.S., Reuters reports.

According to the news provider, Smith's bill would potentially allow the public to give more feedback on patent applications in order to limit the approval of "bad" patents.

A Congressional panel focused on the challenges facing small businesses recently made a visit to Chattanooga, Tennessee, which has created more than 12,000 jobs with the addition of 85 new companies since 2003, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports.

According to the news provider, a number of panelists who were invited by certain members of Congress explained that over-taxation was hurting their businesses in areas such as finance, healthcare and energy.
