In its final major legislative action before shutting down and hitting the campaign trail ahead of the November elections, Congress has passed a measure to fund the federal government for the next two months, CNN reports.

According to the news provider, the House voted 228-194 and the Senate voted 69-30 in favor of a stop-gap effort that would allow for the continuation of major federal programs and agencies until December 3.

A congressional aide explained to the news source that the 64-day funding will decrease the overall budget in the new fiscal year by $219 billion.

The U.S. Congress recently passed a law that will increase safety on commercial flights, the first piece of major legislation aimed at improving airline safety standards in the past twenty years.

According to the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010, which was recently signed by President Obama, all commercial airline pilots will have to have completed at least 1,500 flight hours in addition to having "appropriate" operational experience before they are allowed to fly commercial planes.
