Citing irreconcilable differences, 31-year-old reality TV star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian filed to divorce her husband of 72 days, 26-year-old NBA player Kris Humphries, on October 31.
The two married on August 20, and their multi-million dollar nuptials were broadcast - and partially funded by - the E! Network, which released a statement after news of the divorce broke. The network expressed surprise and sadness at the news and noted that the Kardashian family has always been "uniquely open" about their personal lives.
Rumors of impending divorce circulated in the media in the weeks preceding the filing. One unnamed source told US Weekly that Humphries has been spending exorbitant sums of money partying during an ongoing NBA lockout.
The divorce filing requests the court confirm the couple's prenuptial agreement. TMZ reported the couple signed a legal agreement prior to their wedding to protect their individual assets. Kim's reality show earnings and other business ventures have made her worth about $35 million, according to TMZ, while Humphries' contract with the New Jersey Nets and other assets bring his net worth to about to $8 million.
Kardashian was not the the only ultra-wealthy woman to sign a prenuptial agreement in 2011. Petra Ecclestone, heiress to a $4 billion European Formula One racing fortune, hammered out a prenup prior to marrying businessman James Stunt nine days after the Kardashian-Humphries nuptials.
