What has been speculated on repeatedly since the scandal originally broke has now been confirmed, as Maria Shriver has officially filed for divorce from former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The marriage contained no prenuptial agreement and a copy of the divorce petition, obtained by TMZ, cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split after 25 years of marriage.
Schwarzenegger and Shriver separated after details concerning Arnold's admitted affair with an employee of his household revealed he had fathered her teenage son.
According to the New York Post, Schwarzenegger is expected to award his wife with a "very generous divorce settlement," which would surpass the amount required under California law.
"Arnold realizes he is to blame for the collapse of his marriage," a source told the New York Post. "Maria was a loving wife and mother, and he doesn't think that any amount of money can minimize what he has put her through. He wants to do the right thing, and go above and beyond what is required of him under the law."
