Red Sox Pitcher Lackey to Divorce

Red Sox pitcher John Lackey has filed for divorce from his wife, who is battling cancer.

Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey berated reporters following a doubleheader in New York on September 24, saying he received an inappropriate question about his divorce via a text message from a member of the press prior to the game.

Celebrity gossip site TMZ recently broke the news that Lackey filed to divorce his wife of nearly three years, Krista, who is battling breast cancer. The source said the divorce will be governed by a prenuptial agreement, and that Lackey specified "discord or conflict of personalities" as grounds.

Citing friends of the family, TMZ reported that Krista underwent a double mastectomy in March and was in chemotherapy treatment as of June.

At the press conference in New York, Lackey said he did not know what reporter had obtained his phone number, and complained it was "over the line" to be asked about his personal life. When asked if the pregame text message distracted him, Lackey said, "This is unbelievable I've got to deal with this."

The divorce rate for pro athletes is between 60 and 80 percent, the New York Times reported in 2009.
