Federal immigration officials fined a Midland, Texas, company run by a Texas Tech University regent, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports.

According to the news provider, the company was fined $61,000 after violations in its employees’ documentations were discovered. After being issued to the company last fall, the fine was paid this summer by Texas Tech System Regent Mickey Long, who is the president of the supply company, Westex Well Services.

According to the Clarion Ledger, many companies in Mississippi that choose not to follow the Mississippi Employment Protection Act, commonly known as the E-Verify law, can likely get away with it.

During a recent two-day legislative hearing regarding immigration reform, concerns over the enforcement of the law were raised, the news source said.

Under the E-Verify law, companies in the state with more than 30 workers are required to use the internet to confirm the legal status of any potential employees.
