The US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has launched the "Green Technology Pilot Program" specifically for inventions that improve environmental quality. Patents that meet the green requirements are moved to the front of the examination process line. This could save you anywhere from a few months to a year!

What makes an invention green?

The USPTO has a list of different requirements for inventions to qualify for this pilot program. Here are a few:

  • Improves environmental quality
  • Increases energy conservation
  • Assists in the development of renewable energy resources
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
  • Provides some other benefit to the environment
