Provisional Patents Glossary
PATENT TERM
The duration of protection that an invention receives under federal law before it becomes part of the public domain. During this time, the inventor may prevent others from infringing the patent. Typically, a patent term is about 20 years but is currently measured 17 years from the date the patent issued.
