Trademarks FAQs
You can usually obtain the protection of state trademark registration by applying for and paying a fee to the Secretary of State (or comparable office) in the state where you are using the mark. However, searching for a trademark registration at the federal level is typically easier for the public than it would be to search individual state databases. Federal registration provides more widespread notice to the public and in some cases, may supercede a filing at the state level.
