Wills Glossary

Executor
This is the person appointed in your will to manage your estate, deal with the probate court, pay your outstanding debts, collect your assets and distribute your estate according to the provisions in your will. This person in essence becomes your personal representative.

If there is no Last Will and Testament, the court will appoint a person to administer the estate after a hearing to determine which person is most qualified. If it can be shown that the person you appointed as executor is not in the best interest of those involved, that person may be replaced by the court. Therefore, you should carefully decide who you want as your executor.
