Despite those dismal divorce statistics that state one in two marriages end in divorce, most of us eventually do tie the proverbial knot and get married. And celebrity couples are no exception. Unlike the rest of us however, when they hit the divorce courts there's usually a whole lot more at stake. For folks following the Tiger Woods scandal, CNBC.com recently speculated that based upon a $300 million pre-nuptial agreement, a divorce between pro golfer Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin, would definitely propel them to the top of the list of expensive divorce settlements among the celebrity set.
While we wait to see how the Tiger Woods story pans out, here are the five most expensive celebrity divorces so far:
1. Michael Jordan & Juanita Vanoy Jordan
In 2007, Basketball superstar Michael Jordan and his former wife, Juanita Vanoy Jordan, earned Forbes magazine's dubious distinction as having the most expensive divorce in the last 25 years. When all was said and done, Juanita Vanoy Jordan received $168 million.
2. Neil Diamond & Marcia Murphey
America's favorite crooner Neil Diamond married Marcia Murphey in 1969-before he became famous. The couple remained married for 25 years before divorcing in 1994, when Murphey filed for divorce. According to Forbes, Diamond is quoted as saying his ex-wife was worth every penny of the $150 million she received.
3. Steven Spielberg & Amy Irving
Director Steven Spielberg married Amy Irving in 1985. During the four years they were married, they had one son. Four years later, she divorced him and was awarded $100 million, about half of the famous moviemaker's fortune at the time. Had she remained married to Spielberg for another 20 years, her estimated take-away would have been $1.5 billion, half of his estimated worth today.
4. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva
This Hollywood couple met before Costner made his millions as an actor. Married for 16 years, Silva received $80 million.
5. Madonna & Guy Ritchie
In the case of Madonna and Guy Ritchie, it was the superstar wife that doled out the millions. In 2008, eight years and two children later, Madonna divorced her filmmaker husband who was awarded $76 million.
