Copyright Glossary

collective work

A collection of individual works, such as an issue of a magazine or an encyclopedia. The individual works are initially copyrightable by their respective authors, unless they are "Works Made for Hire." The copyright in the overall collective work may be held by all authors jointly, or it may be held by another party--specifically, the person or persons who compile the individual works, thereby creating the collective work. All collective works are compilations.
