patent term

The duration of protection that an invention receives under federal law before it becomes part of the public domain.

During this time, the inventor may prevent others from making, using, selling or offering for sale the invention covered by the patent. Typically, a patent term is 20 years from the patent's earliest claimed filing date or 17 years from the patent's issue date, whichever is longer.
