I need your opinion please. My wife and I legally adopted our granddaughter this year. Our daughter, the mother of the child, signed off on her rights to the child. The father had his rights terminated in kansas court on 10/2018. Our question is, do the paternal grandparents have any rights to our adopted child since their son's rights were terminated and we are the legal parents? We heard through the grapevine that they have hired an attorney and are going to take us to court for visitation rights. Is this a bluff on their part? We have actually been letting them see our daughter every several weeks for 3 to 4 hours on a saturday or sunday. If they're taking it to this level, and they don't actually have any rights, they'll never see her again.

In Kansas, adoption cuts off the rights of the birth parents concerning the child and gives the adopted child a new family. Visitation with a biological grandparent is at the discretion of the adoptive parent. Outside of adoption, Kansas courts can grant visitation to grandparents if it is in the best interest of the grandchild and there is a substantial relationship with the grandchild. This typically occurs when the parent of the child is divorced or deceased. I encourage you to speak to a family law attorney licensed in your jurisdiction. ATTORNEY ADVERTISEMENT.
