I want to start a sole proprietorship, can I do legal paperwork under my name and use a fictitious business name on my website/products without getting a dba?

The answer to this questions will differ from state to state. For instance, in California, filing the name as a fictitious business name would be unnecessary as long as the business name includes your last name. You should contact a business attorney in your state with your Legal Zoom provider law firm.
