The benefits of being an IC are that the taxes are lower, because you are your own company, and you usually (or used to) get paid higher rates to adjust for the fact that you are paying your own overhead. The issue is that say traditional contract writers have had their field commoditized by content writing mills. This means that they don't get to set their own rates and are ravaged by mills paying $1 to $3 for content when the contractor needs to make $25 minimum to account for overhead (health insurance, corporate and personal taxes). I am with your contractors even still, wouldn't trade in independence for being a corporate slave.
