The dripping wax red seal of Maker’s Mark is on trial right now, with three federal judges deciding whether the company can trademark the distinct bottle feature.

Past issues with the seal have occurred for the company, said The Associated Press. Casa Cuervo of Mexico began using a dripping wax seal on its bottles in 1997.

American gun maker Smith & Wesson recently agreed to withdraw a patent infringement suit filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission and in U.S. federal court against Traditions Sporting Goods and its parent company, Spanish gun maker Ardesa Firearms.

The parties reached a settlement agreement under which Traditions and Ardesa will license muzzleloader technology patented by Smith & Wesson.

The U.S. International Trade Commission recently upheld a previous ITC ruling that Taiwanese cellphone maker HTC did not infringe on patents held by former Apple subsidiary FlashPoint.

FlashPoint filed its complaint in July 2010, alleging that HTC's Android smartphones and Windows Phone 7 infringed on three of FlashPoint's patents related to electronic imaging devices.

After considering FlashPoint's allegations, an ITC judge ruled in July 2011 that HTC did not infringe on the patents in question.

Pennsylvania-based LaserLock Technologies recently filed a patent infringement lawsuit against McDonald's, alleging the fast food giant used LaserLock's patented technology on game pieces used in a popular promotion based on the board game Monopoly.

LaserLock initially sued WS Packaging Group of Green Bay, Wisconsin, which manufactured the game pieces.

Chicago-based candymaker Tootsie Roll recently filed a lawsuit against Rollashoe, alleging the company's Footzyroll line of shoes infringes on Tootsie Roll's trademarks.

Two sisters, Jennifer and Sarah Caplan, founded Rollashoe in 2009, and that same year introduced the Footzyroll product, which is a ballet flat that can be rolled up to fit into a handbag.
