A federal court has upheld a major pharmaceutical company's patent on a leading cancer treatment drug, reports Businessweek.

The federal judge protected the patent on Alimta, a chemotherapy agent manufactured by Indiana drugmaker Eli Lilly and Company. Alimta is used to treat advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma.

The patent, which lasts until July 2016, was challenged by generic drug manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals in U.S.

Recently, social media network Facebook filed for a patent to further improve its ad-targeting technology, making it possible that ads could be based on the interest of users' friends, CNET News reports.

The reason behind the patent, according to the news provider, appears to be that Facebook wants to send better advertisements to users who have not filled out their profiles with enough information for traditional targeting methods.

This form of second-degree ad-targeting is called "inferential" by Facebook.
