The LegalZoom Difference

How Sphinx Productions partnered with LegalZoom

Business Manager

End-to-end management of compliance obligations, annual reporting, business license management, and renewal deadlines.

Registered Agent

A reliable way to receive essential legal notices virtually, ensuring nothing gets missed while traveling the world or juggling production schedules.

LLC Formation

LegalZoom's 25+ years of experience helped Ahmed and Sphinx Productions get started on the right foot with formation and liability protection.

Like any good filmmaker, Ahmed Radwan had a vision. He wanted to build an international movie production company that told stories across cultures and continents. So he founded Sphinx Productions, whose tagline “Where Stories Bridge Cultures” perfectly encapsulates the company’s mission.

Sphinx develops feature film projects from concept through financing and production, working with writers, directors, and partners across multiple continents. But before any of that could happen, Ahmed had to set up the business and get the legal foundation right.

“You cannot approach investors, co-producers, or distributors without a correctly structured entity,” Ahmed notes.

As a founder that operates internationally, navigating the ins and outs of the American legal and compliance system was a big enough challenge on its own. He knew he needed a properly registered California LLC with all the filings done correctly and no surprises down the road. What he didn’t know was where to start.

He considered hiring a local attorney, but, as an early-stage startup founder, the cost and lack of pricing transparency made him nervous. The last thing he wanted was a case of sticker shock when the invoice arrived. Then a close friend told him about LegalZoom. Ahmed checked it out and liked what he saw.

“When it came to forming an LLC and establishing compliance, LegalZoom offered the same legal reliability as a traditional attorney at a fraction of the cost, with a platform that made the process understandable. That kind of clarity made all the difference.”

A real partnership

Running a film production company means your attention is almost always on the creative and commercial side of things, what with developing projects, building partnerships, and chasing financing. The nuts and bolts of compliance—like annual filings, renewal deadlines, and registered agent requirements—aren’t exactly top of mind.

Until, suddenly, they have to be. If these things are left unhandled, they can create real problems for business owners, such as financial penalties, lapsed good standing, and a potential loss of credibility with partners.

Ahmed knew there were things he was probably missing on the compliance side, but with so much else on his mind, he had no way to stay on top of it all. That low-grade, constant worry, he admits, just became part of running the business.

That all changed when he was matched with his own LegalZoom Business Manager, a human point of contact whose job is to handle the administrative tasks needed to keep a business legally operational. For Ahmed, that person was Nadia. Suddenly, annual reports, state filings, and registered agent matters were on her radar, so they didn’t have to be on his.

“It wasn’t until I had a dedicated person who owned that side of things that the anxiety genuinely went away. Before, I was using the LegalZoom platform as a tool. With Nadia, it became a partnership. When something is due, she tells me. When something changes, she explains it. When I have a question, even one that feels too basic to ask, she answers it without making me feel like I am wasting her time.”

Ahmed says he really came to see the value of LegalZoom and Nadia during a particularly frantic period, when he had his hands full actively developing multiple films projects at the same time. Understandably, compliance took a back seat. But Nadia stepped in on her own and took charge.

“She flagged what needed to be done, walked me through it clearly, and made sure it was handled,” says Radwan. “What made it meaningful was not just the competence. It was the tone. She treated it as her responsibility to make sure I was protected, not just her job to answer if I asked. That is a different thing entirely.”

Building for the long term

Ahmed understands that getting the legal side of the business right means protecting what he’s worked so long and hard to build.

“If you’re serious about your business, the legal and compliance foundation needs to be solid,” he says. “And doing it yourself, while possible, costs you something more valuable than money: focus. Having LegalZoom and Nadia at my side means I never have to split my attention between building the company and keeping it compliant.”

For a production company like Sphinx, nothing is more important than intellectual property. The projects it’s developing represent years of work and significant commercial value. There’s no way it can afford to take things like copyright registration, licensing agreements and production contracts for granted. And as projects move closer to production, the legal requirements only get more complex, especially when operating across multiple continents.

That’s why it’s so important to have a legal partner that can grow with the business as the stakes get higher. “Having LegalZoom as a foundation and being able to escalate to attorney access when needed, that’s genuinely valuable and provides real peace of mind,” Ahmed says.

Confidence is king

When asked what’s the biggest thing that LegalZoom gives him that he didn’t have before, Ahmed is quick to answer.

“Confidence,” he says. “Not in a vague sense, but in a very specific one. The confidence that the legal and compliance foundation of the business is correct, and that I have a professional partner who is watching over it.”

And with that confidence comes credibility. Now, when Ahmed meets with investors, co-producers, and distribution partners, he knows Sphinx comes off as a serious, properly structured entity. And he’s got LegalZoom to thank for that.

“It is the difference between knowing your house is built on solid ground and hoping it is,” he says.
