An article she wrote on adoption for The Washington Post has been used in several classrooms and is included in a medical school textbook in Australia. In addition to being an accomplished journalist, she enjoys knitting, baking, and recording music with her husband. A song she composed is included on the soundtrack of the documentary, "Gone: The Aeryn Gillern story," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
