What words are prohibited or restricted in New York business names?
Any words that imply a government affiliation, such as “State Police” or “State Trooper,” or are obscene or offensive, are prohibited from being used in a New York business name. You also can’t use words suggesting a licensed profession or financial institution (bank, credit union, or trust) unless you operate in one of those sectors. What makes a New York business name distinguishable and unique?
If your preferred business name is in use, you may be able to make it distinguishable by adding a geographic modifier, a descriptive word, or changing the core noun or verb in the name. For example, if “New York Air Conditioning LLC” is taken, you may be able to make it distinguishable by submitting something like “New York Air Conditioning Solutions LLC.”
