Informed Delivery
Informed delivery is a free feature provided by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that allows people at eligible addresses to view digital scans of incoming mail and packages scheduled to be delivered.
What is informed delivery?
Informed delivery is a free USPS service that sends users emails with previews of their incoming mail. When individuals sign up for informed delivery, they’ll receive Daily Digest emails that include black-and-white scans of up to 10 letter-sized mail pieces and USPS package tracking notifications. Remaining mail images can be viewed in their online dashboard and on the USPS mobile app.
The informed delivery feature is a helpful tool for tracking mail and packages, but there are some limitations:
- Not all mail will be included, like mail and packages carried by the Postal Service system and mail pieces not processed through USPS automated equipment (e.g., magazines).
- Delivery notifications are not automatically included. To receive informed delivery notifications for mail and packages, you’ll need to opt in to delivery status emails or texts through your informed delivery account.
- The contents of mail are not shown—only the exterior.
- Junk mail is not filtered out, meaning that these mail pieces will count toward the 10-item daily limit.

FAQs
Do you have to pay for informed delivery?
No, you don’t have to pay for informed delivery. It is a free service offered to individuals at eligible addresses.
What mail does not show up on informed delivery?
Mail that doesn’t show up on informed delivery emails includes anything beyond a standard letter size and packages shipped through carriers other than the U.S. Postal Service. Additionally, scanned mail images for only the first 10 pieces of mail will appear in a user’s daily informed delivery email, and package notifications don’t have images—only tracking numbers.
Does informed delivery mean that it was delivered?
Informed delivery shows a preview of incoming mail and tracking numbers for packages scheduled to arrive soon—not their delivery status. To receive email notifications for package and mail delivery, opt in to these communication features through your informed delivery account. Mail shown in the informed delivery email won’t necessarily be delivered the same day.
What is the replacement for informed delivery?
A replacement for informed delivery is virtual mail. LegalZoom’s Virtual Mail service sends recipients color scans of the outside and inside contents of their mail—straight to their inbox. Plus, we filter out junk mail, shred what users don’t want, forward both mail and packages to your doorstep, store all physical mail pieces for a limited time, and store digital scans in the cloud for an unlimited time.
